Mumble Mumble co-produces Encyclopedia Show with Brave New Workshop Student Union
Hosts Allison Broeren (Rockstar Storyteller, Slam Master of Poetry and Story SlamMN!) and Mike Fotis (Brave New Workshop Improvisor and of Fringe Fame) began The Encyclopedia Show Minneapolis. Together, they have dared to bridge the gaps between storytelling, poetry, theatre, improv, belly-dancing and stand-up comedy.

The Encyclopedia Show is a live variety extravaganza that commissions local and touring artists and experts from all the performance disciplines to activate their individual talents to present a different verbal encyclopedia entry each month.

The Encyclopedia Show endeavors to build an age-integrated, non-competitive performance community cultivating accidental knowledge and irreverent loving kindness. Though the show is accredited by The Institute of Human Knowledge and Hygiene, it is our ongoing mission to chafe against logic and proof and find meaning in obfuscation.

Started in the minds of poets Robbie Q. Telfer and Shanny Jean Maney-Magnusson in Chicago, Illinois, The Encyclopedia Show has spread across the United States and the globe to share a passion for embodied and enjoyed learning. Each month we follow the path of topics from the Chicago Encyclopedia Show. You can check them out at www.encyclopediashow.com.

Encyclopedia Show Minneapolis will be at the Brave New Workshop Student Union the third Sunday of the month at 7:30. $10.00

The Twin Cities sexiest spoken word event is back for it’s 17th year.  Named 2010 City Pages Best Of Spoken Word event SlamMN’s Erotica Slam is one not to miss.  Due to popular demand, and the day of love being a Tuesday, we’ve added a second night of sass.  Join us on either Saturday, February 11th for a hot weekend night on the town, or on Saturday, February 14th, to celebrate Valentine’s Day proper.  Make sure to make reservations by calling Kieran’s Irish Pub at 612-339-4499 because the show always sells out.  Come early for dinner, stay for drinks, sexy time raffles, and poetry that will make your squirm, squish, and simmer.  Bring your own 3 minute long poems if you’d like to compete.  Open sign-up starts at 7:00, so you never know who will take the stage.  You could be one of the judges that helps crown the most erotic poet in the Cities, or you could cuddle up in a corner and sit back and enjoy.  www.slammn.org for more details.

SlamMN! is turning the hot up to 10 with the featured poet of the evening, Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz.  Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz is the author of five books of poetry  (including Dear Future Boyfriend and Hot Teen Slut-written about her time as an “adult” editor for websites) as well as the author of the nonfiction book, Words In Your Face: A Guided Tour Through Twenty Years of the New York City Poetry Slam, which Billy Collins wrote “leaves no doubt that the slam poetry scene has achieved legitimacy and taken its rightful place on the map of contemporary literature.” At age 19, she founded the three-time National Poetry Slam championship poetry series NYC-Urbana, which is still held weekly at the NYC’s famed Bowery Poetry Club. Aptowicz just finished serving as the 2010-2011 ArtsEdge Writer-In-Residence at the University of Pennsylvania and was recently awarded a 2011 National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship in Poetry.

December Story Slam Paid It Forward

It was an intimate room for Pay It Forward stories.  Some storytellers did very un-Minnesotan things like brag about the good they’ve done for people, while our champion of the evening phillip andrew bennett low drank himself into a Dr. Pepper coma in the story he shared with us.  Other tellers receiving medals were Christy Marie Kent and Katie Knutson.  Start preparing for your Jerk stories in January!

Poetry SlamMN! November was a special night

Poetry SlamMN! November was a special night at Kieran’s Irish Pub.  We were standing room only full and over 20 poets, both new and old, showed up to compete for our 12 performance spots.  The judges were consistent, the audience was raucous, and the hostess hilarious (if I do say so myself).  Thanks to Chris Rockwell and Josh Ballard for sharing their poems with us during the feature set.  Congrats to winners Syd Malicous, Darius Gray, and Spencer Retelle.  Can’t wait to see you all at Semi-Finals on December 20th!
